Description: The ancient temple of Ggantija, on Gozo, an island in the Maltese archipelago, was built starting in the mid-fourth millennium B.C.—well before Stonehenge and the Egyptian pyramids. It was first excavated in 1827 by Otto Bayer, who believe because of the enormous size of its stones that it had been built by a now-extinct race of giants. In fact, the builders of Ggantija used stone spheres like these as "wheels" upon which to roll the enormous stone blocks from which they built the temple.
